Principal's Welcome

2021
Holy Family Catholic Primary School is a small school situated in the northern suburbs of Darwin. Our school is located next door to O'Loughlin Catholic College, a Year 7-12 college. With our Early Learning Centre open for children from 3-5 year olds, we can cater for children on our site right up to Year 12. Please follow the link below to O'Loughlin's website: oloughlin.nt.edu.au to find out more about what they can offer your child and their education.

Our school continues to be a school of choice in the surrounding suburbs of Karama. Our Early Learning Centre (three to five year old Long Day Care) is newly renovated and has new play equipment which is proving to be extremely popular with our young students! Through the generosity of our Parents and Friends (P&F – see below) we also have a new playground for both our older primary school students and younger primary school students.

Recently, Mr Shane Donohue, our Principal of nearly nine years took a new job as the Principal’s Consultant at the Catholic Education Office in Berrimah. Our staff feel very fortunate to have worked alongside Mr Donohue for all these years. He truly is a terrific leader who made significant improvements, contributions and positive changes to our school. We wish him well on his new adventure. For the remainder of the year, I (Miss Lauren O’Shea) will be Acting Principal and Mr Andrew Walter will be Acting Deputy Principal.

Our Master Plan Stage One was put in place earlier in the year with three classrooms gutted and a new one added. Our lower primary classes moved into these rooms at the start of Semester Two and are thoroughly enjoying their new learning space. We are working closely with our staff to provide planning time to take their students to new places in this new environment.

We continue to implement our Vision and Mission for the school along with our Strategic Plan.

Vision:
With family, faith and friendship we are empowered to be architects of our learning.

Mission:
In the image of Jesus, we commit to excellence in Catholic education with the wisdom to be a merciful and respectful community with the courage to be successful 21st Century Learners.

After an extremely successful and busy 2021 so far, we recognise the successes and build on these into the future. Our focus on Deep Learning and our Learning Powers project (see below) continues to build on our vision ‘With family, faith and friendship we are empowered to be architects of our learning’. Our students and staff work towards being architects of our own learning by continuing to ask ourselves what it is we want to become and how are we going to achieve this.

Our Parents and Friends continue to be very active with community building activities with the highlight being our Colour Fun Run on the last day of Semester One. This year, we raised over $23 000 which was absolutely incredible! We really feel this reflects the strong community we have here a Holy Family Catholic Primary School. The money raised this year will go towards supporting our ICT with Master Plan.

Learning Power:
Above on our tabs, you will note one for Learning Powers. This project began in our school in 2015 and is being supported by educational consultants to implement ongoing improvement in the school. We chose this as a framework for talking about and designing learning. It is about students learning how they learn. The seven learning dispositions are – Changing and Learning, Critical Curiosity, Meaning Making, Creativity, Resilience, Strategic Awareness and Learning Relationships.  We are using these dispositions to frame our teaching and learning in the school to develop our students into deep, engaged learners or as our vision says authors of their own learning. Learning Power uses current research to support teachers to grow their teaching in the classroom.  Through this project and with teachers and parents supporting each other, Holy Family Catholic Primary School is working at the forefront of education.
